The sequence of the Preliminary exercise was filmed by Berke showing many more different filming skills however myself and Aklima acted out a sequence to implicate upon these skills. Stephanie observed what was going on in order to show that everything followed accordingly to the storyboard plan.
Our story is about a boy and a girl who started speaking but the film did not last very long due to this however we ensured that every filming skill was included within the sequence. We started of by using a graphic match to match the 0 of the room with the eye of character a (the boy) to show the room of which this was in. This interlinked well as this was then when the boy walked into the room which as this occurred this shot was a match on action of which an action is carried on from one shot to the next. Then as character A walks into the room it is then a eye line match to show his eyes then what he is staring at which is character B (the girl). They then started a conversation which was recorded via a shot/reverse shot therefore shoeing one character face then switching to the other characters face therefore its a reverse of the first shot between character a (the boy) & Character B (the girl). Throughout this sequence is restricted via the 180 degree rule therefore continuously filmed on the same side which on this case was the left side therefore the characters were always on the right side to make it not confusing for the viewers.
Continuity editing is the predominant type of film editing used within the process to smooth over the film to make each shot be in sync with each other even more so this type of film editing for cuts between shots is based on movement therefore you cannot even notice it.
Eye-line match: this is used to coherent of the characters eyes however it's then replicated what they are looking at. An example of this is as follows;
match on action: when a character starts an action within the first shot then carries it on in the next shot therefore an example of this is someone opening a door to walk through it then the next shot is then walking through the door from the other side. A better example of this is as shown;
shot/reverse shot: this is when the camera is switching from each characters face as they are having a discussion therefore the camera is going from a normal shot to a reverse shot as it's then facing the opposite way at the other person. This is shown;
The 180 degree rule: this is a basic guideline of which should not be broken as the characters should always stay on the side which you filmed on to start of with therefore if you filmed on the left side the person should be on the right side therefore if you filmed on the other side it would be opposite therefore would become very confusing for the people watching it as to them looks like the character has then changed direction when they haven't.
the green therefore is replicating the side of which the characters can be on to show that they haven't changed sides or to not confuse the audience therefore within every film this guideline is carried out and in the rarest of circumstances is ever broken.
Graphic match: this is when two shots are interlinked together via a similar shape or the composition of a shape therefore replicating the similarity between two things within two shots.
this is a very peculiar poster due to the title has red around it therefore symbolising blood even more so it says he had the perfect life before he became a hero replicating that he is being punished for doing something positive therefore Karma is returning back on him due to the violence he brought upon others in the past to become a hero. Finally the poster makes evident that the gun has the most power therefore control over everything else within the film defining he does not hold the outcome that is dependent to the gun.
the opening scene is defined through 3 major aspects; Editing, Camera & Sound.
at the start of the film the sound is digetic the drilling therefore blocks out the repercussions so nobody can hear he noises of the people as they are being killed the straightening of the chair is to replicate they wasn't there the way of which the manor they are dressed describes but also shows them to be quite ordinary people of which the characters can hear as well as the audience, in addition the dialogue between the two men is interlinked furthermore as all 3 where there waking slowly to the car the editing amongst the clip is slow even more so the camera is a steady cam where its moving away from them at the same time of it being a medium shot. Also when he moves the car this is a straight cut along with a tracking shot and the digetic sound of the radio in the car as well as the digetic sound of the car. This is then a jump cut as it jumps from him falling asleep to him cutting how instantaneously to show time has passed via the noise of the lorry which is non digetic as only the audience are able to hear this thus it was supplemented in. Finally when he goes into the motel reception at the phone box in the motel it dos a pan shot up-down and left-right to add effects the music is non digetic as it's a backing sound track used to build up tension which starts after he sees the blood but also the cuts between each bit become faster replicating something is going to occur then the movement of the rubbish cart to discover the bodies where they had been murdered there is also a non digetic sound of which is the fly sound which implicates there dead bodies rotting etc...Furthermore as he feels up the water it shows a low angle shot of which the little girl walks out it then shows a point of view shot of him looking at the girl. He calms the girl down so it does not disrupt anybody or enable anybody to hear thus as the gun is pulled out pointing at her then an extreme close up of the gun is used t show the gun has the power of the situation and to emphasis its authority as it's the biggest thing there then the gun shot is a digetic sound furthermore the scream is of anxiety and far as the gun is shot thus killing her.
starts of with a voice over about the sheriff and how this used to be a peaceful place however now it's no longer peaceful have to be weary carrying guns whereas before they never had to. But it furthermore is evident that within the title it says "there are no clean getaways" meaning that everything bad committed has its comeuppance eventually.
In the opening scene it's set in the desert about how it's empty therefore vulnerability anything can happen but also there is no help or anyone to save anything from bad happening, it is evident that a mysteriously weird object is taken from the guy when he is arrested therefore leaving suspense to find out what this object is thus as his taken back when the officer is on the on the phone we can see the guy moving closer as of which the camera is then zooming in to an close up adding tension but also the music tells us that something bad is going to happen. Even more so this happens just after he replies with he has it under control showing that this is not the case therefore miss leading. it goes to a high angle shot to show his vulnerable and weak furthermore goes to a extreme close up of the handcuffs strangling him to add more effect, there is digetic sound of shoes screeching across the floor. furthermore it goes into a pitless gaze of the killer shows the thrilling and excitement & pleasure he is getting from this thus once his killed him the heavy breathing to show his exhilarated. Then he pretends to be a police officer as he pulls somebody over in there car by putting the sirens on to indicate for them to pull over, in addition the guy in the car does not know he is a psychopathic killer therefore the audience know something bad is going to happen whilst he guy gets out of the car as requested by the killer he then shoots him with the oxygen tank and pipe which is then revealed to us therefore the suspense for wondering what it was has now gone as we know it's a gun.
the bridge is hidden therefore shows a sense of mystery meaning everything is unclear about what is happening but even more so why it is happening. this is based on a true story therefore factual events being retold, Romantic music used therefore setting the tone to be a love scene therefore going to a quiet spot for lovers. the women is married which is the dialogue. As they drive the car is tracked via a tracking shot however they're conversation is an over the shoulder camera shot suspense builds up when fireworks thrown at car leading to think that's the the thing which is happening however this is a start of a chain of events which occur. even more so after this a black tinted out car then appears and stops behind them it shows the characters from a high angle shot to suggest there vulnerable and add more tension but as the car then drives on it becomes apparent she knows who it is in the car at which time the car then drives back to introduce a sense of panic by the music within therefore non digetic sound also at which a torch shines light blinding them to keep the persons identity mystery but also emphasising the tension to which the audience can see something bad is going to occur at which point they are blocked in by the car therefore say cannot escape there fate of which them dying.
Brick:
A teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. it's a crime drama mystery.
this scene is where he discovers the mystery of what had occured to the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend of which she had been murdered. however they chose for him to find by the tunnel as it then presents loneliness but also the fact of unknown therefore hoe she died and who done it.
Editing is of which the process of looking at the footage from the shoot during the making within a film/tv programme furthermore placing it in the desired order and interlinking it together.
The speed of editing helps you to determine the mood of what is occurring on the screen. Scenes at the beginning of the film are slow paced as its to introduce the story but also the characters so we are able to understand what is going on. As the film goes on scenes then may be come shorter as the editing cuts between telling 2 story lines or more at the same time.
Style of editing; How are shots linked together, the movement from one shot to the next is called transition.
Straight cut; Most common and invisible form of transition. One shot moves instantaneously to the next without attracting the audiences attention. Straight cuts help retain reality, they do not break the viewers suspension of disbelief.
Dissolves; Fading one shot of the screen while another shot fades in.
The audience will be able to see both shots on the screen at the mid point of the dissolve. They are used to usually show connection between two objects or two people.
Fades; A gradual darkening or lightening of an image until it either becomes black or white. One shot will fade until only a black or white screen can be seen. They're used to indicate a particular section of time within the narrative or can show the passing of time.
Wipes; One image is pushed of the screen by another it's typically found in star wars films.
Jump cut; Is where the audience attention is brought into the focus on something very suddenly. This occurs by breaking the continuity editing therefore known as discontinuity. It appears as if a section of the sequence has been removed.
thisposter gives us a incite into the film for example the phrase "take back your life" indicating A man awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken
on his identity and that no one, (not even his wife), believes him. With the
help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is. the mcguffin of the film is prince shalla- world food however we are not interested about this were more interested about the idea of his identity being taken and him proving he is who he says he is.
the trailer is set out going from start to middle to the end then back to the begin this is to keep you interested as well as not giving to the much of the film away at the same time.
the main key scene within this film is the hospital scene this is due to the amount of fast editing which has taken place which includes someone getting murdered and he has to try escape within a matter of seconds by grabbing the scissors to cut himself loose. therefore the music used to create tension of a very high standards creating disorientating sounds.
furthermore in this Liam Neeson is the the subordinate as he is a passenger he does not hold the cards therefore his binary opposite is the guy who is the imposter of him.
even more so the women are presented as the male gaze therefore to seek the sexual pleasures of the male eyes and expose the women to be portrayed as there prey.
one of the most excruciating scenes throughout the whole film is the end scene in the hotel where we think he is about to die however he hits his head regaining back his memory of everything therefore a trained assassin defining this as where he becomes the reluctant hero who realises what he used to do was wrong and corrupt bringing down his own enterprise of work place which was run by him as
In this exercise we did all the different camera shots and how it is they are used through out film, these were,
Long shot (LS) - A shot that is from far away
Medium shot (MS) - Where the person is not close up but not far away
Close up (CU) - A shot where something is up close
Extreme close up (ECU) - Extremely close where you can see just there eyes, for example
Point of view (POV) - Seeing what the character is seeing
Over the shoulder - Looking over the shoulder of someone to see the other person talking
Low angle - Makes someone look powerful
High angle - Making someone look small and powerless
Pan - Right to Left / Left to Right, Goes round
Tilt - Titling the camera up or down
Crane shot - Very high angle looking at someone/something e.g. helicopter
Tracking shot - Following someone around with the camera
Rolling shot - Like someone is falling, moved side ways
In my group we videoed every shot. After we had videoed the shots we edited them altogether so that you could see which ones where what. The reason that i done this was being you are able to identify which shot is what. We chose to shot every shot, the reason for this is because we wanted to make sure that we had tried doing each shot at least once.
We did not tell a story with each shot, the reason for this is because we just wanted to make sure we got every shot in the video, and just to get a feel of what it was like to use the camera and the different shots. However, i believe that it was still successful, this is because we included every shot within our video. Not only this but it also allowed us to all get used to using these shots and understand how to and where to use these shots.
What we did well and didn't do well on:
I believe that in this video we did the shots well and we understood every shot and how it should be used. However, i believe that we need to improve on how to use the camera and to try and put it into a video the next time we are filming. Overall, i feel that we all tried our best and we did to the best or our abilities, we just need to work on a few things to make sure that the next view is better and more realistic.
In the group we tried to make sure that veery shot that we did was as steady as possible, however, we was not able to achieve this with every shot, so i believe that this is something we may need to work on. I believe that each shot was taken appropriately but i believe that we need to improve on how we film it and where we are filming them.
From the outset of the film is believed to be about the £40,000 that went missing however after the murder had occurred the audience was then apprehensive as anything could happen next. Even more so the audience know the murderer is in the house but don't know when they will strike next however increasingly through the film the more apprehension there is the less violence to which appears on screen.
Within thrillers are characterised through the fast pacing however typically within Psycho this appears 3 times at the car, shower then the staircase scene. However the most effective scene was the shower scene as at the time of 1960 nobody had ever seen anything as exquisite as this due to the amount of cuts and the way it was shown therefore still today is regarded as what set the foundation for films of today even now highly regarded as one of the best scenes ever due to the precise execution and editing.
Furthermore in Psycho the story isn't extraordinary it's brilliance lies within the construction. An example where it's surprising the audience happens twice within the film the shower scene murder but also at the end the revelation about the Mother.
A viewer who watches the film for the first time will experience the full impact to what Hitchcock had intended for example at the start of the film everyone thought marian was the main character as she took the £40,000 however after her early departure leaves the audience in shock.
The McGuffin of the film is the money which drives the plot along at the start but returns at the end of the film.
However the fact that Hitchcock leaves most of the film to the audiences imagination is in brilliance within itself which is able to occur due to the editing when looking at the frame by frame analysis.
The variety of camera shots used is to add emphasis to aspects within the film or increase the apprehension some examples of this would be a point of view shot
North by northwest is one of the most captivating thrillers to ever been filmed and produced with a wide regard and popularity to a lot of people back when it was produced over 50 years ago but still today it could be considered a perfect thriller as some of key things of which a thriller should include it concludes this as it includes everything in it.
furthermore the poster is thrilling as it raises tension but also suspense as to what happens therefore a sense of danger also the bright colors gives it a unusual thriller scene as they're usually set in darkness and in a City not in middle of no where. In addition Cary Grant was arguably at the time one of the most famous actors however Alfred Hitchcock name is in the center showing that he is an important person but also a largely liked for his films.
This scene is where they have him drunk to let him drive over cliff to die therefore it being taken as an accident therefore suicide this is occurring because they believe him to be a undercover spy however he is an innocent person. this is one of five key events within this film but this is the first within opening of north by northwest.
This therefore makes him wanted for murder as he was framed by Vandamn therefore is now not only a target for being murdered but is also wanted for suspecting of committing a murder.
this is one of the most famous scenes in any thriller known today as its set within a unexpected scene of which you would expect a murder whereas usually set on a street in darkness & rain. This is used to build up tension but also include usual cars like a black Hurst which they would shoot from but it drives past nothing happens then the man notices the plane which is odd as its dusting where there is no crops.
Then they use various angles to build up the tension as if we see what he does which is a point of view angle but also likes the subjective view point. Close ups on the face then what they are looking at, then close up again as the character then reacts to what has been seen. He wants to transfer the menace that appears on screen into the mind of the audience.
In this scene they use Mt Rushmore due to it's a symbol of order however this throws that out of the window as it's turns into disorder.
Roland Barthes theory was that they contain enigma's which are mysteries but better known as enigma codes. An example of a film which carries out this plot & idea is Enigma as a person girlfriend disappearance which left him highly obsessed with her. Furthermore he believed all texts and films were complex bundles of meaning. Enigma codes, problems introduced which occurs most often in the disruption stage. Open text is where the mystery is not resolved at the end however closed text is where the mystery is resolved at the end.
Whereas Levi Strauss theory is of hero & villains which is better known as a binary opposite. Even more so some famous examples which carry this story within the thriller genre is James Bond films including skyfall etc. He claimed narratives can be organised through binary opposition- two things opposed such as often dominant vs subordinate therefore in thrillers this is heroes vs villains.
Traditional Hollywood structure narrative:
Usually consists of a three act structure which is set out as the first 25% is the set up of the film then the next 50% of the film is known as the confrontation furthermore the final 25% is known as the climax. Therefore in the set up of the film it enables us to understand the story whilst introducing the equilibrium which is known as an enigma code where a problem is introduced this is the disruption stage. then the confrontation scene is where the binary opposition takes place where two things are opposed usually dominant vs subordinate therefore in thrillers this will be hero vs villain. The final 25% is the climax therefore where the mystery is usually resolved this is known as a closed text, nut also linear is chronological order, few, if any, sub plots, tendency towards closure at the end of the film.
Todorov;
Also Todorov had a narrative theory which he believed you could apply this to any film. He furthermore believed that all films followed the same narrative patterns.
There are 5 stages the narrative can progress through;
A state of equilibrium (all is as it should be)
A disruption of that order by an event.
A recognition that the disorder has occurred.
An attempt ti repair the damage of the disruption.
A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium.
A great example which follows these 3 people ideas very well within the thriller genre is Taken as Liam Neeson is a security guard going about his normal life when his daughter is on holiday, this is a state of equilibrium. then she gets kidnapped which is the state of disruption by an event such as his daughter getting kidnapped this is recognized through him being on phone at the time and realizing this. An attempt to repair this by getting her back through killing all the villains, new equilibrium gets her back then goes to his life after killing several people. Also this follows binary opposition as he is less resourceful than villain but also follows enigma code as he does not know who kidnapped his daughter until the end where he solves the mystery by which in doing so returning his daughter back home.
Vladimir Propp;
Character types which he analysed through traditional folk stories such as "little red riding hood" therefore childrens book which have gone through being read to children through many generations. he believed for there to be 8 key roles which are consistent to those of which are included within thrillers; hero/villain, helper/donor (provider), father/dispatcher/princess/false hero, Furthermore one character can perform more than one role.
Laura Mulvey:
Laura Mulvey- "visual pleasure & narrative cinema (1975). Her theory was the male gaze= women viewed as objects of male erotic desire- in film and audience.
Saw men as active but women as passive. Women don't have agency therefore they do not drive the plot along/forward. The audience is forced to identify with male gaze. Cinemas reflect patriarchal society therefore it's male dominated. Patriarchy & phallocentrism linked - Phallus (penis) a symbol of power e.g. in cinema=guns=phallus=power.
this is also refered to as a Macro element. What i have learned so far about genres is that there are many different types of genre therefore this also means within genres you have sub-genres too. some types of the most famous genres are horror, Comedy & Thriller within thriller a sub-genre is a Horror Thriller.
Guess the genre:
Narrative: This is also known as a micro element. The narrative is which a film is organised and set out. this is a non linear which is where the sequence of events are revealed out of expected order for example pulp fiction. Linear narrative is where the sequence of events occur in the order of which they occurred therefore happening in chronological order.
Thrillers consist of many aspects however some of the main features which make thrillers unique on the other hand is through such things as Fast pacing therefore building up dramatic suspense to the audience, frequent action which is used to keep the audience drawn in and interested as well as so they do not lose interest within the film. it also includes resourceful heroes who have to foil the plans of the villains when they are at a disadvantage as they are basically handicapped this is because the villains are better equipped. furthermore thrillers are a villain driven plot therefore the villain makes the plot as it goes along Thrillers use such devices as suspense which keeps the audience wondering when something is going to occur but in addition they include red herrings which is where not only are characters fooled but also the audience as well. Also cliff hangers are used to add more suspense for example such films as Sky fall which has loads of cliff hangers for example jumping out of sky scrapers etc. even more so they usually take place within exotic settings including foreign countries not in dull areas. however frequently in thrillers are "hard men" accustomed to danger for example police men. on the other hand they may also be ordinary citizens drawn into danger by accident. While such heroes have traditionally been men, women lead characters have become increasingly common as time has gone on an early example Sigourney Weaver character, Ripley in the movie Alien 1979. on the contrary thrillers can also overlap with mystery stories but are distinguished by the structure of their plots. The hero must thaw the future plans of an enemy rather than uncover a crime which has already been committed. an example is a murder mystery would be spoiled by knowing the murderers identity. Danger & violent confrontations are standard plot elements of a thriller. the climax to a mystery is when the mystery is solved but the climax of a thriller is when the hero defeats the villain as well saving the lives of others. there are several types of thrillers here are a list of examples: Legal thrillers, spy thrillers, action adventure thrillers, medical thrillers, police thrillers, political thrillers, religious thrillers, high-tech thrillers & military thrillers these are just a few different genres of the broad variety amongst the thriller genre comity.
My name is Ben Michel, i am 16 i use this to write blogs about reviews of film genres even more so of just films. my most favourite type of film genre is Horror one of my favourite films is Scream. I listen to all different types of music however my favourite type is pop music. Also i like animated comedies on TV one of the most favourable to me is Family Guy.
